Kid Ink Interview With Walder (Video)
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with one of RCA’s newest signees Kid Ink during his latest stop in Toronto. We conversed about the one song that made him fall in love with hip hop and also his favourite instrumental of all time that made him start out producing. We then went in a different direction and talked about what video game he left in his PS3 at the hotel before talking about his love for movies. He revealed that he would like Tristan Wilds to act out his life if Hollywood made a movie on his life and also discussed his ideas for a possible reality show. Ink was also apart of a recent campaign for PETA called “Ink Not Mink” and spoke on the importance of the topic. We also touched on his tattoos but unfortunately he has never been tatted by Kat Von D. Being in the studio with Pharrell recently, I asked him if he regrets any of his ink-work and would ever consider getting test-tube skin to cover anything up in the future…that was a no go. Corey Miller aka YG- Ripsta is hailing straight out of Moreno Valley, California and is trying to put his entire state back on the hip-hop map. With his thought provoking lyrics and witty punch lines and metaphors YG says he “is the resurrection of real hip-hop.” “Listen to my music and see what everyone’s talking about.”, he boasts confidently.
At An early age Ripsta was making noise in his elementary and middle schools for being one of the best freestyle rappers out of his city. He started off banging on his desk and competing in ciphers. He talks about his experiences of living in group homes and growing up being the school outcast in his raps. His music is relatable to almost everyone because he talks about real life experiences.
His goal is to motivate people to overcome their trials and tribulations while taking life one day at a time. Corey Miller AKA YG-Ripsta has been known to give an awesome stage show and really connect with his audience. Not many Hip-Hop artists nower days talk about music that is relatable to everyday life. DopeMinds – Today we are kicking it with a new up and coming rapper named YG-Ripsta. For starts where did the name come from?
YG Ripsta – I got my name from freestyling and rolling my tongue when I rap. My classmates used to say “man you ripped it” or “damn you really ripped that track up”. So Ripsta had two meanings, 1 rolling my tongue in my raps and 2 ripping, or butchering, tracks.
For those that don’t where Moreno Valley is exactly in Cali is it in LA or the Bay ?
YG Ripsta – It’s 60 miles east of Los Angeles and it’s located in the Inland Empire, which is considered Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. It’s close to the desert so it gets hot in the summers. A lot of people from LA left LA and migrated to the Inland Empire because the housing market was cheaper. So we have the same hood environment as LA except it gets 10X hotter. So it’s became 10x more violent than LA, especially in the summer time.
DopeMinds- You have been grinding out on the internet lately. We know you are gearing up to drop a new mixtape, “A Day In The Life”.
What can the fans expect from your mixtape?
YG Ripsta – The fans can expect what I like to call ‘’Real Life Music’’. Music that crosses all color lines and is relatable to pretty much anyone. I address the controversial topics such as being Bi-Racial growing up with a white father and black mother. Growing up in group homes and feeling neglected and rejected as a youth. I address overcoming spiritual battles within myself while addressing battles with thoughts of suicide.
I talk about growing up in the streets and overcoming gang violence while trying to stay positive. The biggest issue I address is the current state of Hip-Hop and how the art of MC’ing is dying. While calling out mainstream artist such as Rick Ross or French Montana, who Capitalize off watering down the Hip-Hop culture.
DopeMinds- Any features or Producers worth mentioning on there?
YG Ripsta – Yes I got my man from Orlando Florida Idrop dropping beats and mastering the mixtape. Also I got my man Onewaymuzic on the mixing board.
DopeMinds- How do you feel about the Newer rap artists from Cali saying the OG’s aren’t helping them?
YG Ripsta – OG’s aren’t helping us, I’ve reached out to a number of different OG West Coast artists such as MC Eight. They feel like no one helped them so why should they help us. At least that’s the mentality I get from them when I reach out to them. However I don’t give a fuck only you can stop you not them. We have the internet now and you can get shows off craigslist (laughs). So the only one stopping us from making it is ourselves.
My whole mindset is if you helped me cool I literally owe you a favor, and if you weren’t there for me don’t expect shit from me. STRAIGHT UP IT’S FUCKED UP BUT KARMA’S A BITCH!!!
DopeMinds- Who were your West Coast inspirations to make you rap?
YG Ripsta – My West Coast influences were all the members from NWA. The Game was also a big influence for me to start rapping. I rocked with E-40 when I was younger his whole style was dope as hell. My biggest influences were Tha Dogg Pound. Daz is a producer I really want to work with and Kurupt is a beast in his own regard. I can’t forget the late great Tupac, my mindstate is on the same shit his was. Addressing real social issues in our urban communities and bringing social awareness to the masses.
DopeMinds- Who were your favorite East coast rappers?
YG Ripsta – Now I’m not gonna lie the East Coast is the reason why I even picked up a fucking microphone. Where do I start.. my biggest East Coast influences are as follows.. Big L, Biggie, Cormega, Wu-Tang, Tribe Called Quest, Immortal technique, 50 Cent, Jay-z, Nas, Maino, Joe Budden and the list goes on. I will always give the East Coast its well deserved respect. They taught me the true meaning of Hip-Hop. They taught me the art of storytelling. I became a lyricist because Big L, Nas, Cormega and Joe budden.
DopeMinds- Back when you were young and started banging those school lunch tables .. what clicked inside that you that just made you spit some bars?
YG Ripsta – I got in trouble in class for banging on desk when I was attending Mountain View Middle School in Moreno Valley. So me and a few niggas from my class went to lunch and were banging on lunch tables. Then someone said “spit some shit” and they took me as a joke. They thought I was gonna spit some wack shit. However I spit a few bars about how them niggas was lame as hell for underestimating me.
Once I clowned them all in a rhyme every one was like “damn kid your nice as fuck”. A few niggas thought I wrote it which I didn’t. So I just walked around school all day busting freestyles and listening to Tha Dogg Pound.
DopeMinds- What else were those few few lines about as a youth ?
YG Ripsta – They were about clowning niggas for underestimating my rhyming skills. We were once enemies, I was bullied a lot and picked on in school. So I just took all my anger out on them in a rhyme and earned my respect. I still had to fight like hell because they were mad I was nice with flowing. Plus I was biracial in a black school so they hated me because I wasn’t black enough for them. However that’s a whole other story.
DopeMinds- Are you on a label? If so let us know…..
YG Ripsta – No… I’m not on a label at the moment. I’m looking to join a label as long as the situation is right. If I could sign to a Label I would want to sign to Interscope, G.O.O.D Music, Aftermath or Atlantic. Like I said the situation just has to be right. Last but not least I would like Tech N9ne to call me up, I’m very interested in signing to Strange Music. If anybody has contact with Tech tell him to hit me up.
DopeMinds- Any new projects coming out? Any features?
YG Ripsta – Yes, the mixtape ‘’A Day In The Life’’ is dropping this year around Spring Break most likely. As far as features we have C-mac from Memphis on a track called “Hip-Hop”. Chief24c from Philly on a track called “Cry Wolf” and my nigga Lil Wayne on the hook. I also have a few other features but can’t drop names until the project is released.
DopeMinds- How would you describe your style of hip-hop?
YG Ripsta – I would describe my music as “Real Life Muzic” because its real life music anybody can relate to. If you have been through any kind of struggles in life then you need to cop this mixtape.
DopeMinds- What’s your goal for the hip-hop game?
YG Ripsta – My goal in the Hip Hop game is to challenge the current rappers to step up their lyrical content or get the fuck out the game. Hip-Hop is not about who has the most money. Hip Hop is about the story of the streets, the voice of the youth. Hip Hop is about talent and wordplay. I don’t hate people like Rick Ross or French Montana but don’t call yourself a rapper. Call yourself an entertainer.. that’s it..nothing more. When you say you’re a Hip Hop artist or Rapper you step into my realm and you don’t want to do that!
DopeMinds- Can a West Coast rapper make it without talking about gang life?
YG Ripsta – Yes, a West Coast artist can make it without talking about gang life. E-40 and Too Short don’t talk about gang life and there multi platinum recording artists. However most West Coast MC’s talk about gang life because we’re surrounded by gangs, and gang violence. Gang banging is a culture in the West Coast. I have friends who are 5th generation bloods and crips.
DopeMinds- We know, as Dr. Dre once said, that hip hop is just entertainment. We heard one of your tracks where you were going in on it on hard body. With that said would you say your song “Death Before Dis Honor” is in your real life living or just entertainment?
YG Ripsta – That’s real life that song was a freestyle I did off the top of the dome. I was working with a producer named Dice from my city and he was talking shit in the studio. He use to be from a rival hood and niggas I use to fuck with growing up had beef. He reminded me of some of the kids I grew up with who use to talk mad shit about me and tried to kill my self esteem.
Well anyway we were in the studio with my cousin Stan and the producer was just talking mad shit. So I said “fuck it drop me that Jay-z beat “ and I just went in on that nigga. I didn’t mention any names in the song but it was basically a diss towards the producer I was working with (laughs).

DopeMinds- Best food spot in Cali?
YG Ripsta – Best food spot in my hood is P&G burgers in Moreno Valley off Perris and Alassandro Blvd. They have the best double bacon cheese burgers I have ever had in Cali. Or I get a fat ass stack of Chili Cheese Fries from them.
DopeMinds- Who is the most over rated emcee in the game right now?
YG Ripsta – French Montana, Riff Raff and Lil B. However I give Lil B his props he drops some real shit every now and then. However French Montana is Garbage and so is Riff Raff them niggas are the laughing stock of the industry.
DopeMinds- Would you do a song that compromises your talent if it meant making a lot more money?
YG Ripsta – On the real.. yes I would do a song that compromises my talent. Why? Because It might be a foot in the game then once I’m in the industry I’ll start being my regular self. Catch people off guard like I thought he was wack but nope. Just a means to getting my foot in the door.
DopeMinds- What is a typical day like for YG-RIpsta?
YG Ripsta – I wake up, smoke a blunt of that California OG Kush and then turn on a beat. Vibe with that beat and come up with a concept for a track. Then I’ll write it on paper and drop it in the studio. When I’m not rapping I make money online selling studio equipment or in the streets selling cd’s.
Back To The Norm…….
DopeMinds- We had a chance to see your music video for “Insanity” before it drops. You were going in on that track. It sounded very personal. What type of events transpired that made you write that?
YG Ripsta – Growing up feeling like the social outcast. Because I was never white enough for the white kids and never black enough for the black kids. Also growing up my Dad’s wife hated me she was always pointing out my flaws and put thoughts in my dads head that I was a bad seed. My dad was receptive to his wifes input and became very bitter and mentally abusive on me.
No matter what I ever did to show my dad I was a good kid it was never good enough for him. As far as my mom she had anger issues and we use to fight a lot. She would often curse me out or attack me with objects growing up whenever she got pissed off. So I struggled with a sense of self value and self worth. I felt very suicidal as a kid and had very low self esteem. My mom considered my baby sister the golden child though. Spoiled the hell out of her and babied her all the way to adulthood. She could never do any wrong in my mother’s eyes.
DopeMinds- You rapped, “Never did I fit in and I couldn’t accept it/ no friend around because I was constantly rejected.” Did those type of bars come from your trials and tribulations as a youth in group homes?
YG Ripsta – Yes… they came from my trials and tribulations as a youth in group homes and also with my parents. I couldn’t accept not being accepted so I vented my anger by hanging out with gangs in or around my neighborhood. I vented my anger by robbing or fighting or just doing drugs. Really I was battling my personal demons within. So that’s what the song reflects.
DopeMinds- If you don’t mind can you tell us more about what YG’s life was like as a youth over all?
YG Ripsta – Well my grandmother had a bipolar disorder and my mom felt very neglected by her father growing up. I had to deal with my parents living in two seperate states, my dad lived in Council Bluffs iowa, about 10 minutes from Omaha, Nebraska. While my mom lived in the west in Moreno Valley, California.
I had no siblings to look up to just a half sister and she would always treat me like shit because she looked at me as taking away my mom from her. When I was in group homes or in Iowa she was the only child so she was use to getting her way. Whenever I would come back to my Mother’s house she was always very abrupt and resentful of me. She would slam doors in my face or just be a little bitch towards me. My mother always blamed the issues on me, so yea it was a fucked up situation.
DopeMinds What events transpired that lead you to live in group homes?
YG Ripsta – My Dad’s wife not wanting me around, she was a white lady who grew up in the country side of Iowa. So she did not understand urban culture at all. She looked at me listening to rap music and associated it with me wanting to be a gangster. She did not understand the slang or clothing I was wearing. So she just associated everything with wanting to be a gang member or trouble maker.
Never did she congratulate me on getting 3.5s and above in school. I was a very smart and intelligent student in school. Anyway she convinced my Dad to put me in group homes to get me out of his life soon after my mom followed his lead. So from 12-18 I was living in group homes all across Los Angeles county or Council Bluffs Iowa.
DopeMinds – Damn that’s horrible. So how bout now in 2013… how has YG-Ripsta evolved from the early days of being “rejected” to what he is now?
YG Ripsta – I just want to help other kids know that there not alone. I make music for the common man,. The mom on welfare or on section 8. The kid who grows up getting stepped on or bullied all his life. I let them know there’s light at the end of the tunnel and to not give up on their dreams or in life.

For the past ten years, Lil Wyte has been rattling Chevy car stereos all through the south, with a high-octane sound deriving from the rich legacy of Memphis rap. If there’s one quality that Memphis artists are known for, it’s their commitment to putting on other local artists in order to enhance the movement of their prideful city. Along with a class of rappers such as Frayser Boy and Gangsta Blac, Lil Wyte emerged onto the scene under the guidance of Memphis’s Three Six Mafia, and has been hypnotizing minds with DJ Paul and Juicy J for the past decade.
Being a firm disbeliever in coincidences, Lil Wyte acknowledges the true power of the bond that he has built with the three six clique. Wyte recalls a time in his childhood when his friend played a stolen copy of Triple Six Mafia’s cassette tape. This proved to be an experience that would change the trajectory of his life. Wyte claims that after hearing this tape, which could only be found at local convenient stores, he was compelled to delve deeper and deeper into the music that would ultimately become apart of him. This sound has now manifests itself in his latest ventures with Wyte Music, his independent label under Three Six’s Hypnotize Minds umbrella.
Currently, Lil Wyte is touring promoting his fifth studio album, “Still Doubted” which features the likes of Project Pat, Young Buck, and Bubba Sparxxx. The project also includes track work from heavyweight producers Big BOI Beats and Lex Lugar, with bangers that will keep you turnt up from the parking lot to the palace.
